How To Draw Puff Balls Hair

Hair is one of my acme v favorite things to draw and colour, and this was also a very requested tutorial. I tried to add as much information equally possible while keeping the video fun to sentinel and total of tips!

Nothing here is a difficult rule, and information technology'southward mostly to evidence how I exercise things, so I promise yous enjoy it 🙂

Using references

It'south tough to draw things when you don't check what they look like in real life. And so every time you're stuck, search for photos! Not but of anime drawings, but bodily people as well.

Where, you inquire? In that location're plenty of places; you can become on Pinterest, Instagram, DeviantArt, etc.! And if you retrieve that's cheating, copying, or stealing, information technology'southward not. Every corking artist uses references, so y'all should besides!

Shape and book

Hair and optics in anime are often used to limited emotions and a character's personality, so they're usually given more details than in real life. Merely this is drawing, then in that location aren't whatever complex rules for this! Let your manus flow, and practice your inventiveness. Take a look at your favorite anime drawings. How does the hair make you feel?

Straight black hair feels serious;

while fluffy curls are warm and welcoming!

Sketching tips

I start hair just thinking of the general outline without giving much attending to details: when sketching, only the general shape matters.

If you don't know where the hair starts in the caput, think of the skull, and add together some padding. A elementary line in the middle should be enough to represent that. You tin make the top part more than circuitous as y'all learn how pilus works.

Likewise, information technology's good to work with S curves. Even if the hair is straight, it tin be a long open Due south, making the pilus look light and flowy. With wavy pilus, the S curves will be more visible!

For perfectly curly hair, I use a different technique. I offset draw a spring and ascertain the front part. Then, I indistinguishable that line shape.

Later on that, I erase the lines that are on the back and connect them to form a total spring!

You don't need to describe every strand similar that (feel free to do so if y'all similar though!), a few volition exist plenty to give the feeling y'all are looking for, and the back tin just have a simple shape.

Don't be afraid to delete what looks wrong and try over again. Even if information technology takes time, spending fourth dimension on this part to go the feeling right will pay off in the end.

Another important tip is to work with long lines, non curt chicken scratches. It will make your drawing look more polished, and yous volition have fewer chances to hurt your wrist!

Take breaks if you are lost, and expect up new references to refresh your eyes. Make sure to leave them open up while you draw; it will aid a lot.

Nearly lineart

Depending on the drawing, I volition clean upward the sketch instead of creating lineart.

By "clean up", I mean I will erase the messy lines and go over them when necessary, giving information technology a different feeling than a perfectly make clean line. I experience this helps me relax about art and not worry too much nigh details.

You don't need to over-zoom and glue your confront on the screen to be sure the lines are perfect! To be quite honest, y'all are likely to exist the only one that will exist able to spot your pocket-sized mistakes.

The brush for lineart tin be the same as for sketching, simply this volition depend on how you want it to look. I highly recommend looking at the standard brushes or checking Clip Studio Avails. There are many fun brushes you can easily download and use.

In this phase, you can brand the lines thicker where they intersect or where shadows will be. It volition give your lines more depth.

Shading

Once yous have the base of operations color added, define where your light source is. Remember your basic lessons about brawl shading? Practice exactly that.

To do this, lay out a general shape with the shading color.

Once you have the general shape defined, y'all can smoothen it until your liking.

But every bit y'all are still learning, you don't need to become fancy on the shading. Go slowly, within the scope of what you feel is challenging enough for your current skills, so get in complex equally you go!

As you lot can see, in that location's some kind of backlight on the blackness that matches the grayness on the white side. I usually add together some extra color to the hair I draw, because information technology looks pretty!

At present, how to pick the right color?

Short answer, there is no correct color! Play with them until y'all observe what you lot like: try pink in blue, majestic in green, orange in yellow, and and so on. Have fun! Wonder how to brand black and white hair not expect grey, purple, etc.

If you use similar colors to your drawing'due south environs, the tone will look correct. For example, if her shirt were ruby, I would add more cherry-red tones to the pilus. I tend to use colors already on the drawing and playing around with them. Like this hair strand in a blueish and scarlet room: there's a bit of each color on information technology.

But if you are working with complicated pilus like a rainbow or gradient, you can gear up a new layer on pinnacle in Multiply blending mode, and test out which colors work better without messing upward the slope.

Highlights

This office is very fun, and in that location are many ways to add smoothen to the hair.

Yes, even white hair!

I like to airbrush the pare color on the bangs, so when I add white highlights on top, it will prove!

If you don't know which color to use, you tin can take the hair colour, create a new layer, ready the blending mode to Add (Glow), and then add together blobs, triangles, lines, etc. Whatever shape works, so practice what fits your taste, and and then use hue and saturation (Ctrl+U) to change the color to a tone that matches.

When I add highlights, that's when I too add messy strands. We all struggle with messy hair, correct?

Another little thing I enjoy is making the eyelashes and eyebrows transparent. You can hands do that past locking the lineart layer, and and so coloring with a colour that's darker than the pilus, or lighter. Try information technology out; it depends on the pilus color y'all are using, and if your lineart is set every bit multiply or non.

Decision

Peradventure you're still unsure how to draw hair even subsequently this tutorial, but I don't expect you to of a sudden be a pro. Equally I always say, fine art takes time.

So at the very least, take away this important point from this: use references! I can't repeat this enough but brand sure to use them mindfully.

I believe y'all don't actually demand a step-by-step to learn something. Instead, attempt to understand things in your ain manner. Equally long equally you enjoy what you lot practice and are up for the challenges life will bring, you will grow as an creative person!

Practicing is key, but patience and passion make up the door.

Thank you very much for checking it out!

Have a good time drawing ☆ ~('▽^人)
